338-08
i hear federal is planning a 338-08 coming up in 2006. 2800 fps in 160 gr nosler bullets. what do you think about it and would it be a real improvement over the 308? tell me your thoughts on the subject.

I don't think so. As I've said in previous threads, the 308 case has a reasonable capacity for .30" & smaller bores. when increased to .33" I prefer the larger 30-06 case, or the magnums. Not that the 228/08 wouldn't be a good cartridge, just that in terms of use, I'd rather have either a smaller bore or a bigger case capacity. 0 -
I like the 338.08 because of the hig Energy at shorter ranges 400 yards and closer but what I am really fascinated with is the Sub capabilities of such a round with 300gr bullets.[;)]

I have seen a 338-08 built on an old model Ruger 77 (tang saftey) It was a very fast handling rifle with a 22" barrel. I have seen it kill white tails and it does that well. It makes a smaller and lighter rifle than can be done with a 338-06. I thnk this is a great idea if its used for deer at short range in thick cover. 0
