.338 Win Mag bullets for Africa

Planning on taking a Ruger No.1 in .338Win Mag to Africa for Eland, Kudu, Gemsbuck. Any experience on bullet Mfg., grains, and construction for these critters in a Ruger No.1.

Also contemplating installing a speed hammer, new trigger and barrel tensioner for E.A Brown & Co. Any one with experience after installing some of these products from Brown?

  Is there something lacking in the accuracy of your #1? I guess if you're having some accuracy difficulty then you could consider those products. I've installed the Hicks Accurizer and Moyer triggers and they perform nicely. I don't see a reason for the 'speed hammer' though but each to his own. It is more important to have absolute confidence in your firearm and ammunition than worry about $60.00 or so.

  Of the presently manufactured bullets for controlled expansion I prefer the Blue Mountain (John Day,OR) and the Swift A-Frame. If you can find a packet of the virtually discontinued Bitterroot, buy them.

  With the size of animal you are hunting being in the moose class shooting the Nosler Partition would be my choice. Some of the shots you may have to take could be on the long side. The partion has shot very well in all of the .338's I have had. The bitterroot and Swift A frames did not hold good accuracy past 200 yards in my testing.

  OK,,,so nobody commented on gifting the gun,,I guess I have to add my two cents. Before I changed the integrity of the gun I would try different bullets and weights. Barnes makes a fine bullet as does Hornady and Nosler,,all three fly different, try shooting several and different weights to see which bullets and weight your gun prefers. 225grn might be a great weight to start with seems to be a good overall weight for the .338.
  I dont think you can go wrong with noslers or barnes or hornady all are very good. Just need to determine what weight your gun likes.
  
  Or you could just give it to an old friend,,better yet take him with you to africa.

  Based on the advice of assorted sages, I now have sample .338 loadings using the 250gr.Woodleigh, Swift A-Frame, Barnes X, Nosler Partition, and the 240gr. Northforks. I will test these at the range in the next couple of weeks.
  
  As for the comment to gift the rifle to a friend.. . . I dont have any friends that would appreciate the rifle, nor could handle the recoil of the .338.

  Perhaps,,instead of changing the integrity of the rifle you might invest the cash into some friends.[:)]
