    Temblor,

Will do...I am hoping to dial in the load before next weekend. Have a 3 day long range shoot in Nevada I am going to be going to and we have the option to shoot anything up to 1.5 miles. Probably put some steel at a mile to see if I get lucky.

If not I am going to see what the maximum my 308 will do. [}:)]

if you want to get to 1 mile, you'll need a TON up upward adjustment. My pard shooting a tight necked 300wthby needed a 40MOA base and was almost maxed out to ring steel at 1 mile. Good luck,..let us know how that goes. He had the 5.5-22x NXS and it did not have enough travel.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?

    JustC,

I have the Badger 20MOA cant and the NF 5-22X Think she will do the job? I remember the NF has 100MOA of elevation. If I had it at exactly mechanical 0 that would leave me 50MOA + the 20MOA base correct? Total of 70 minutes of Elevation?

As I recall my pard had to buy a 40MOA base from Dave Tooley? at the match to get it done with a 30" kreiger on a Stolle action built by Sid Goodling. He had the 5.5-22x as I recall. Your MOA numbers seem spot on to me. He was running the 190gr VLD with RL25.

Run your numbers through the JBM program and see what your come-up is.

    contactfront,

You're making me jealous [}:)]...going to my home state and shooting as far as you want to. LOL. I have to say when I go out next I will be shooting as far as the desert allows myself. I use my 7mm though with Berger 168's. I need a tighter twist to go with the 180's or I would. Maybe if I moved up to the next power level in cartridges I could get it done.

We have the second amendment so that all the rest are secure....UNK>

    ContacFront,

Good shooting! It puts a lot more fun into shooting when you have an accurate rifle and load.

I don't want to rain on your parade but you need to examine some of the numbers that you have currently and compare them to what you need to achieve this goal at 1 mile.

First, the load at ~2700 fps. won't get the job done at all. You need to look for more velocity and the next accuracy node above the 71.0 gr. load. The barrel length is a slight handicap here. I'm usually using a 30" or 31" barrel depending on the cartridge and powder volume. For the naysayers that don't think a few inches can make a difference, go run the math for 1760 yards.

Second, your velocity with the 71.0 gr. load needs to go up somewhat significantly for 1500 yards and even then, probably won't make the cut at 1760 yards. Reason being is the speed of sound which I figured at 1129 fps. at the Las Vegas location.

If I take the daily average temperature of the area around Las Vegas (because I don't know where you will be shooting), the temps will be in the low to mid-70's with the humidity running about 20% average. If I just plain assume ICAO sea level, then you will go trans-sonic and subsonic given your current velocity. The 71 gr. load should get you about 1150 fps. at 1500 yards and need 55 MOA of up considering a 300 yd. zero. At 1760 yds. you fall to 1033 fps. but need 77 MOA of up.

Like I wrote above, don't take this wrong, just do some more load work up and let's see where you can get to. I think you have a great bullet and cartridge combination, we just need to find some more velocity. See if you can get some good numbers from your chronograph and let's mash them around a bit.

    Best.

    Nononsense,

    No offense taken bud!

I know what you mean, I've been running a few numbers myself. The mile marker maybe out of reach for this 300win. Sounds like this is a good excuse for a bigger rifle. 338RUM or Lapua?! Ha! [}:)]

338cal, 300gr SMK from a 32" tube would be wicked strong. The 338 Lapua with that pill still holds the record for the longest kill. Dude hit a woodchuck at 3125yds, but you really need to see the abomination of a scope base he used. It was something like 12" tall off the rifle. (precision shooting at 1000yds by Dave Brennan)

Nonosense is their a rifle in that picture? Must be interesting trying to get a cheek weld on the stock. More like artillery than a rifle, impressive.

Tell me I don't have to have a rifle that looks like that to hit at a mile. Won't a NF scope with 100moa of elevation and a 30MOA base work? Something like a 338rum or LM should be able to do that right?

    ContacFront,

No, this stuff isn't necessary, it's to illustrate what Justin commented about above. The sighting equipment is by a company named SLR Harbor. This link is for the article that talks about the equipment and the long range shooting record:

Yes, there really is a rifle in those pictures and cheek weld is not even a glimmer of a thought. My first impression was that it was similar to the David Tubb "Chin Gun" that he tried to convince us to use several years ago. Thank God most of us had enough sense to ignore him and move on to properly designed rifles.

    Best.
