I just got the latest issue of Guns and Ammo, and it has a good article on reloading the 38-40. When loading older guns, I general use lead bullets to put the least amount of wear on the barrels.

8 grains of unique, 180 gr cast bullet and you're done. I posted a similar load for a 45 colt. I have fired literaly hundreds of thousands of cast bullets in my life in almost any caliber you care to name. I think Unique is the best pistol powder made. It works with virtually any pistol round with the possible exception of Magnum loads in the 44 mag. The older unique did burn a little dirty but who cares, you're cleaning the gun anyway. try it...you'll love it.
