Reloading for the WIN 38-40
I am trying to find some information on relaoding for the WIN 38-40 Rifle and Pistol round. I have a WIN 73 and a COLT Revolver in 38-40 and would like to find a load that is interchangeable.
I have several weights/types of commercial cast bullets in .401 caliber and some Commercial Full Metal Jacket/Flat Nose (180 Gr TCFM)bullets that I would also like to load. As for the powders, I can get that when I need to.
I have found a number of commercial loadings but almost all refer to the use of cast bullets,I am using both Hornaday & RCBS Dies and I have the seating portion for both RN and Flat Nose bullets.- any suggestions on where to go or what to try would be appreciated.

I just got the latest issue of Guns and Ammo, and it has a good article on reloading the 38-40. When loading older guns, I general use lead bullets to put the least amount of wear on the barrels. 0 -
this is for a pistol load, if you try the jacketed , I myself would start 10% less starting load, you can alo look at the powder you choose web site, they usually have their own data, hope this helps
case length 1.305 , aol 1.592
175 grain alloy
bulleseye 4.0 =740 fps max 5.9=965fps
unique 8.0=931fps max 10.0 =1115
2400 11.0=740fps max 14.0=1111fps0 -
8 grains of unique, 180 gr cast bullet and you're done. I posted a similar load for a 45 colt. I have fired literaly hundreds of thousands of cast bullets in my life in almost any caliber you care to name. I think Unique is the best pistol powder made. It works with virtually any pistol round with the possible exception of Magnum loads in the 44 mag. The older unique did burn a little dirty but who cares, you're cleaning the gun anyway. try it...you'll love it. 0 -
Thank you all very much for the information - I will put it to good use. --RJB-- 0
