40's or 50's??????????

hi guys

still juggling the 40-50.

read all the ballistic tables. for 223 looks like 40 has less

drop and wind drift than the 50.

thats using 3800fps -40

3500fps for 50.

thats max speed for both bullets.

  I don't play with the 223, but you need to look at the longer ranges on your chart. As a general rule of thumb, around 300-400yd the slower/heavier bullet passes the lighter/faster bullet.
  40gr V-Max, 3800fps 200yd zero 10mph crosswind 500yd, down 39.1" 27.1 drift, 618msec TOF, 1418fps remaining velocity
  50gr V-Max, 3500fps 200yd zero 10mph crosswind 500yd, down 39.8" 22.7 drift, 619msec TOF, 1691fps remaining velocity
  
  Note that while they both get to 500yd at almost the same time (within 1/1000 of a second) the 50gr has 4.5" less wind drift, and is moving almost 300fps faster than the 40gr is, under the same conditions.

  depends on the rifle twist in your barrel, my particular AR has a 1:8 twist so it's more like 77 grain bullets or 80's for me. at 100 yards it doesn't really seem to make much of a difference between 55 grain bullets and the heavier ammo but the farther out you go the more relevant that heavier bullet seems to become.

  No offense meant, but I would quit worrying about whats in the ballistic tables. Buy a bunch of different weight bullets and start reloading them. As long as you keep good data on your different loads, you'll find out quick enought what works for you, accuracy wise at the distance your going to shoot at. If it turns out to be the heavier bullet, so be it.
