Good place to buy components?
We don't have a gunshop that carries reloading components around here, so I was wondering where everyone gets theirs. Prefferably an online company. I need to get some primers and powder and am trying to get a place lined up to buy from.

I get mine from a local guy that sells for about the same as powdervalleyinc.com does.

The problem with buying powder and primers online is the hazmat charge. It is in addition to shipping charges, and you can't ship powder and primers together( I wonder why??). The only way to come out on it at all is if you are buying bulk military powder. Last order I got from Widener's www.wideners.com I had ordered bulk powder and primers. They were delivered in ( 1 ) box, with ( 1 ) $20 HazMat fee.

If(and I mean if)they ever get caught shipping primers and powder together, then they probably won't ever be able to ship hazmat materials again. Imagine what that does for business. Most legitimate sellers know the rules, and they won't break them for anyone, because they know that hazmat declared items are very subject to inspection. 0 -

You, like so many others, really need to study up on the rules as provided by the Federal Gov't. These suppliers are not breaking any laws, use your head. They can't afford to break these laws and they are definitely not stupid since shipping is a big part of their business. Before getting up on the soap box and proclaiming that others are breaking the law, maybe you should talk to EOD Guy, who happens to be a certified expert in this area. Don't be offended, it's just that this has gone on long enough.

"Small arms primers are classed by DOT as a Division 1.4S explosive and smokeless powder is classed as a Division 4.1 flammable solid. The two material are considered compatable for shipping purposes by the Department of Transportation. They must be packaged, marked, and labeled seperately, but may be shipped in the same overpack."

"...49CFR, 177.848, says that division 1.4 explosive (the primers) and division 4.1 flammable solids (the smokeless powder) are compatable and can be shipped with no segregation requirements. Each must be in a package that is marked and labeled properly. Both can be shipped together or both packages may be placed in the same outer package to make an overpack.
I have been a certified hazmat shipper for over 20 years and have to be recertified every 3 years (2 years for air shipments). I am currently certified for hazardous materials, radioactive materials, explosives, hazardous wastes, mixed wastes, and air shipments under IATA/ICAO regulations."

The cheapest way is to stock up on primers and powder at gunshows,online may be a little cheaper but by the time S&H and hazmat fees are added it costs a lot more. I buy them at shows and then buy bullets,brass and equipment online. 0 -
recently I have been buying them all from the local shop. He uses a wholesaler that runs a truck down here once a week and therefore does NOT add the hazmat to the price as there is no hazmat fee. The price for 1lb at wholesale is ~$18 but at his shop it is maybe ~$23. In order for me to pay the hazmat and have it be worth the charge, I have to buy at least 5lbs of powder. If I am working loads and need a new powder to try, I amnot going to buy in bulk until I decide it is THE powder I want to use.

Best prices can be found from your local gun club. Eventually someone with an FFL will do a components sale, which usually has rock bottom prices. Ours out here has no shipping costs, cause it's a several thousand dollar buy, usually, so the suppliers don't mind footing the cost to ship.
Seriously, get involved with a BIG gun club.

As others have stated try the gunshows or a local skeet/trap club. Usually a shooter there has some connections to avoid hazmat.
