Give 296, H4227, or AA#9 a try, and see what you can do with them.
Of the three I prefer H4227 for a lower velocity load that burns clean enough as a rule.

Gun control is hitting what your aiming at.

I would recommend 6.2 gr of Titegroup. I would not use the slower burning powders that mrbruce recomended. I load for a velocity under 800 fps. I use the slow powders for near magnum loads. Titegroup is designed to work better where there is a good bit of air space in the case.

One of my favorite loads for CAS in my Ruger Vaqueros in 7 1/2" barrels is using Vihtavuori N320. This is one of the cleanest powders I have ever used. Using 6.5 grains should give you around 900 fps. with those 250 grains bullets. Very accurate load, pleasant to shoot.
