.270 WDBY - need help
I can't get close to factory with this one, anybody got any ideas?

Shootist...no insult intended...but How do you know you
aren't close to "factory"? Unless you have used a chrony to
test each under similar circumstances you are most likely
depending on bad info.
Factory figures are often skewed. They often use 26 - 30 inch
test barrels, while yours may only be 24". Will make a great
difference, but the factory is looking for figures to give
to the buying public and often their methods are often............. non-typical? Weatherby figures are notoriously high!
Secondly, each newer version of the reloading manuals have
more litigation cautious numbers in them. This means lower
numbers in the maunals, and lower powder charges.
So if you are matching factory numbers against manual numbers
there will always be a large difference! Even if you are using
a chrony....all other aspects must be the same...especially
barrel length and freebore.

A. I have a chrony, every serious reloader must have (and use) one.
B. My comparrison is against factory loads in the same rifle, a 26 in. WDBY Mk V.
C. By close I refer to both MV and accuracy - it is really frustrating!!!!!!

wthby factory is a MAX load of imr7828 burn rate powder. Try that and see.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

Tried 72 gr. but no joy = not willing to go uch above that tho[xx(]

shootist,..you getting any pressure signs yet? that weatherby ejector plunger, unless it has been lightened,..will definitely let you know when the pressure is getting too high VIA circular marks on the casehead. remember,..wthby factory ammo shows high pressure in non-freebored barrels,..that is letting you know it is wayyyy up there in the powder charge. The manuals usually are made with non-freebored match grade barrels,..so their charges will no doubt be on the light side. Keep upping the charge. You'll get sticky bolt lift long before you have an accident,..especially with slow powders like 7828.

OK, next time I'll try a bit more. Talked to a guy at Weatherby and he said "you can't put too much 7828 in the case" - he wouldn't tell me their load but sounded like it was more than the books list by a bunch.

occasionaly a factory employee will be honest as you have seen. It hasn't been long that one or two of them would even admit that their powder (even if not 7828) is the 7828 burn rate. That is why I like slow powders so much,..you just keep putting it in and trying it. They are the better powders for "user friendliness".
That freebore in a wthby barrel, if I were to guess, would allow several more grains at least than the manuals show.
