The serial number you list indicates 1977 production. This would make it a Police Positive Special. My Colt book does not list any Police Positive models with a serial number beginning with 0 and having an R suffix.

I have to disagree with Dr. Pig. The PP and PPS were made at the same time. The PP came first in 1905, and the PPS was added in 1908 with a longer frame and cylinder to handle the longer .38 Special cartridge. I should add that the PP was made through 1943, while the PPS, as a sperate model, and as a D-frame (Detective Special, Agent, Cobra, etc.) was made until Colt discontinued most of its models a few years ago.[This message has been edited by JudgeColt (edited 12-28-2001).]

Yes the ejector rod has a shroud..It appears to be a factory barrel...I have seen lots of 38 special Police Positives (Specials)...but never before with the shrouded ejector rod. What is the difference between the Police Positive, and the Offical Police model? I understood that the Offical Police was a smaller and weaker frame, and it was upgraded and replaced by the Police Positive...I am new to the colts..so I don't know alot about them.

Bloodhound, You have it reversed on the Official Police and Police Positive Special. The Official Police was a larger and heavier frame. The Official Police model was in production from 1927-1969 then was modified and called the Official Police MK III until production stopped in 1975. Buying a Blue Book of Gun Values might save you some expensive lessons.

I only paid $200 for the Police Positive Special, and it is a true 99%...The gunsmith who has the FFL I had it shipped to, told me when I picked it up, that he didn't think it had more and a few cylinders of ammo through it...I liked the gun, and its my 1st Cold revolver, so I am a Happy Camper...I am just trying to find out what gun I have bought, and how it fits into the COLT revolver scene. Thanks again for all the help.Scott
