any quality reload manual can direct ya to safe loads for this screamer. have had good results with less-than-max loads (3500-3600 fps) w/55gr V-max hornady's & 50gr TNT's from speer . i dont need 4000 fps to have fun on varmints & my 22" ruger M77 won't tolerate heavier than 55gr anyway due to it's 1 in 14" twist. works great for me !!best, joey

I've used 41 grains of IMR 4064 for about 3750 fps in my Pre 1964 70 Winchester for many years with a 55 grain Sierra bullet. There is very little, if any, throat erosion showing, and groups are very good.

Thanks for the replies. I know I can go to reloading manuals for loads, but I am most interested in seeing what WORKS in ordinary usage, and not necessarily on the top end. Emery

There is an article in one of P.O.Ackley's books(I don/t remember if it is volume I or II) that is worth reading about the 220 Swift. Made me want to run out and buy one right then.

Mazo, my memory is getting foggy. That was 38.5 grains of IMR 4064, not 41. 41 would be a maximum load, not safe in some rifles. Hope you haven't loaded already.

Mazo, as a matter of practice (as you know) I don't offer my personal loads, but I will say that IMR 4064 and loads in the 3800 fps range are a nice combination in my rifle.

Ackley gave a range of 37-38.5 gr 4064 for a 55gr bullet giving a velocity range between 3705 and 3865 fps.

I like 37 grains of RL 15 under a Nosler BT or Sierra HPBT, both in the 55 grain bullet. I use magnum primers and have had great luck in accuracy and have had no signs of excessive pressure.

I'm pushin the factory Hornady 40gr v-max out the tube at 4100+ fps and the group is miniscule!!! I can't beleive that 5 bullets went through that little hole. AND,...it is factory ammo. I would not even entertain any of the BS that some folks like to throw around about the 220swift. It doesn't eat throats quickly, and it is extremely accurate. Iconoclast and his experience with his for many years, was part of me making my decision to go that route over the 22-250, and I can honestly say I don't regret it.

My gunsmith and several friends say that their best performers have been around 3800fps +/- in this caliber, as has already been mentioned.

    I'm a man,....but I can change,.....If I have to,......I guess.

after years of shooting with my fn mauser single shot varmint rifle i find no need to experiment further. either 4064 or 4350 with 53gr sierra hps and regular (not mag) primers gives consistency beyond belief. important to find the right seating depth for your own rifle, as this is VERY important.
