I just acquired a Stevens, Savage Model 322-A , 22 Hornet from my grandfathers estate. Can someone tell me anything about this type of gun? What is it best used for? Thanks

This is an inexpensive rifle worth between $100-200 depending on condition. With a scopeand factory ammunition it could be a good varminting gun at up to 150 yards. With handloads, an accurate barrel and lightened trigger pull you might add 100 yards to that.

Pretty much agree with v35. His value numbers are about right However, trying to make the .22 Hornet into a 250 yard rifle is a little wishful. With a scope, trigger work and a tuned handload - certainly 150 yards is realistic. And to that range the energy is adequate for reliable clean kills on gophers, chucks and fox sized critters. With a lot of experience and maybe 'K'ing the chamber - even 200 yard hits become a realistic consideration. However, the energy has seriously deteriorated at that range. Wih any modicum of respect for your quarry and the desire for a clean kill, I would limit shots at those distances to nothing larger than gophers.Best........!

In shooting varmints at over 100 yards, factors other than velocity and retained energy become essential to success.A quality barrel,a set trigger, good reloads,a good scope and perhaps most importantly, bench rest conditions,Using a Low Wall Winchester Hornet having a SST,and 10X target scope and using a tripod rest, 90% of the woodchucks taken were from 75 to 250 yards. The remaining 10% were takenat from 250 to 325 paced yards. For 250yds and over, pulse tremors easily drift crosshairs off the small target. I preferred a sitting position, leaning against a tree or fencepost with knees forming a bipod and the butt resting over the shoulder against the post.Loads were 12 gr. H4227 with Speer 45gr Spire points.Considering that the handloaded Hornet at 200 yards exceeds the muzzle velocity of the 22LRHS by 500fps and the Spire Point is a lot more efficient, 300+ yard shots sound less extravagant. There were many 200yd head shots. As for power, out of 100 chucks taken with this rifle, two were disemboweled by mid body shots from the rear at 150 and 215 yards. All other shots had about a 1/2" exit hole. What I consider the limiting range of this outfit was the 10X scope.Making allowances for the Stevens/Savage gunin the inquiry, I scaled down the owners expectations.

I will add that if you have the chamber reamed for the .22 K-Hornet, and load them properly, a 45 grain bullet can easily be pushed to 3250 fps. I know this quite well, as I have a Winchester low-wall with a 28-inch barrel chambered for the K-Hornet cartridge. 300 yard shots are easy as long as I do my part.
