Trace History of Winchesters

I have a friend who has several Model 1895 Winchesters and he would like to find who owned them in their lifetime. Any suggestions? Thanks, Vince

The Cody Museum, homeplace of the Winchester resurch facility, may be able to provide "letters of authenticity" (at $35/each) on your friend's rifles. However, they can only provide when and where the rifle was first shipped, and whether or not it was ever received back in the shop for repair/modification (and , again,where and when it was then sent back). Police don't have any records, unless it was used in a crime, or reported as stolen, and I doubt that these records are kept very long. The FBI won't admit to keeping any records even if they had them, which I doubt. Your friend will find a lot of dead ends on the few trails he has available.
