I was hoping that one of the gunsmiths that regularily answer some questions on this forum would answer your question, but since none have, then I will make an attempt.First you can see by my "handle" that I am a wing-shooter and don't generally use my 48AL as a deer hunting tool. If your state demands that you must use a shotgun and slugs -- then the 48AL is the wrong shotgun for the job. You need a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 with a rifled barrel and scope attached. If you have no choice but to use the 48AL for the job --- then:1: check to see how you have set the friction mechanism up. The bronze friction piece ALWAYS goes beveled edge toward the barrel guide ring.2: the friction ring should be right behind the bronze friction piece with the flat surface against the recoil spring.3: DO NOT oil the magazine tube, I can guarantee you the typical "Browning" split on the forearm. DO NOT grease the bronze friction piece either.4. Since you are shooting a "Magnum" 2-3/4 inch shell - you may have to set the recoil mechanism up as they do in a 3 inch magnum. That means you will have to have an addition bronze friction piece and 2 additional friction rings. In this configuration, a bronze friction piece goes up against the the barrel guide ring as usual, then a friction ring with the bevel towards the bronze friction ring. Then there is a second friction ring turned so that the flat surface on it and the first friction ring are back to back. Next comes the second bronze friction piece with the bevel going into the bevel on the second friction ring. Behind the second bronze friction piece is the third friction ring with its flat side towards the recoil spring. With the amount of "OOMPH" you have from the rifled slugs, it is causing the carrier latch to release at the wrong time and jam everything up. Obviously the carrier latch is working correctly on game and field loads.Be aware that the bronze friction piece needs to be changed about every 3000 rounds, but under this condition of excelerated wear may need to be change out much sooner.[This message has been edited by AdamsQuailHunter (edited 12-23-2001).]

Sorry for the delay in response, out of town for holidays. Thank you both for the response! I appreciate the technical description very much and discovered the error in the assembly. I appreciate the second response in that it clarifies what I suspected....I'll use it for chukars and leave the slugs for my Winchester......
