"Foremost" Mausers
I was in a gunshop today and saw a used Rifle in 30-06. It had a Mauser type action with a slide safety on the right side. The Make on the barrel said "Foremost". It had fixed sights and a Weatherby type looking stock, with reddish forend. Good blueing, creepy trigger. Anyone heard of Foremost? What should it be worth? The base of the barrel also said 18,000 Tons per square (actually picture of a sqaure). I guess that is to let you know what pressure you can shoot?Any info appreciated.Roy

Don't know anything about it, but most Mausers of the large ring 98 type can handle- in an emergency- 100,000psi and certainly 50,000. Even older Mauser 91's and 88's can handle mid 30,000psi pressures. I don't know what this is, but 18,000psi is pretty low.

18 tons = 36000PSIforemost sounds like old monkey-wards. 0 -
Pardon me! I misread. 18 Tons or 36,000 PSI, eh? Still pretty low for a 98 action... tell me, did it have two or three locking lugs? Mauser type or mannlicher type magazine?

As far as I could tell, it had two locking lugs. I don't know how to tell if it has a Mauser or Mannlicher type magazine. It did have a metal floor plate. 0 -
Ok. We're assuming it has two locking lugs and a Mauser type magazine, ie that it does not have a hole in the bottom, but rather a plate. In this case, the gun is a pre-98 action and 36,000 PSI would be just about right. Now all you need is someone to help you with the real question... just what is it?

I found "Foremost" in the back of the blue book. - J.C. Penny - The asking price on the gun is $299. 0 -
Proof testing in tons psi is British practice. If you took the action out of the stock you may see other proof marks and symbols on the bottom of the barrel and/or receiver to identify the maker. 0
