Probably need more info in what you're looking for but here goes.If you want something economical and fun to shoot, look at the ak copies, the Romanian SAR's. There are plenty to be had still. Should run you approx $300-400 depending on where you look. Magazines are easy to get.If you want something with a little more power, you can look at the HK91 copies out there. I'm just guessing on price but I think they're anywhere from $500 to $700.After that the post ban AR-15's come to mind. Probably run you about $650 - $900 depending on make/model.I'm sure somebody will add some other recommendations. Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment.

Go with the SKS. Since you mentioned you arent going to be needing a serious competition or hunting rifle, I'm assuming you dont want to spend a crapload of money.SKS are generally rugged, fire a decently priced and powerful cartridge, and wont hurt your wallet too bad. They were designed by Simonov in the USSR, and are, as far as I know, all imported. Depending on where you get it from (China, Russia, Romania, etc.) and whether you get a pre or post ban (and what add-ons), you can expect to pay anywhere from $150-$400 for a very good to excellent quality weapon. But your average SKS is probably somewhere between $150-$250.Note: A big part of picking any rifle (including assault weapons) is to actually look at and hold the weapon. Dont get your hopes set on one before you actually hold it! Just head on down to your local Gun-O'-Rama and ask to see the ones that you like the most.

SKS's also have alot of cool aftermarket accesories available too. Check out some of the add-ons for the particular model your looking at before you buy, you'll be glad you did.

Problem is that a mini-14 will cost you an arm and a leg at the prices they are going for now.I personally cant see why it's so popular. It's way too short to target shoot with, and the thing just looks lopsided and silly to me. That's beside the price.

This one is a no brainer. SKS is the way to go. Great guns at a cheap price, with dirt cheap ammo to boot.

The SKS, I've sold 4 SKS's in the last month, another just got sold today. They are still available for a lot less than the other options. I've got new Norinco SKS's starting at $250. I've also got some nice Romanians and even a few Russian ones still in their boxes. The accessories they come with vary from one to the next. Some of the Norinco's come with the chest pouch, sling, cleaning rod, cleaning kit, etc. I've even got one of the Norinco paratroopers and Red Fiberglass stocked SKS's. Then again some would prefer the Norinco MAK's and NHM's new in the box. They run more money, but still a nice gun for a reasonable price. I find it interesting that the Chinese rifles are starting to get the credit that they deserve. I've known they were a decent gun since I started handling them in 1986. Overall probably the most trouble free gun I've ever handled. In all the time I've handled them, I've never had to send one in for any kind of repair. Let me know if there is anything I can help with. My E-mail is LRARMSX@HOME.COM
