RARE Winchester rifle!!
I own 2 Winchester Model 70 rifles with stainless receiver& barrel and with synthetic stocks. Only two calibers were made (that I know of) 30-06, 270 (I own one of each). What makes these guns rare is that a feather weight barrel was put on them. When I looked the guns up in the Winchester book, I couldn't find them, so I called winchester and spoke with a man who works in assembly and was told that the feather weight barrels were a mistake and they had discontinued making them. I have a letter from this man confirming this. To my knowledge there were very few put on the market like these. I want to know if anyone else has possession of like guns or knows about such errors and what value these guns might have.

Looks like you have the Model 70 Classic Laminated Stainless rifles that were made in 1998-1999. Original list was $751.00. Value now between 440-640 depending on condition. Hope this helps.....you're right about the calibers. They were made in several Mag calibers also.-Charlie

Winchester Model 70 super grade featherweight= Disconntinued in 1960. SG & FW's are very rare. Must be properly documented. "4 to 5 times more than standard production featherweights models w/similar chamberings." I would guess- $2,800/$3,800 respectively. 0 -
Thanks for responding Charlie. I have the original boxes (the guns have never been fired) and the box says its a Model 70 sporter stainless bolt action centerfire lot# 1973. I purchased these guns well before 1998, 1992 I think... Anyway supposedly, they were not supposed to have a feather weight barrel on the sporter models, as my letter from Winchester also states.Doug 0 -
Take a breath, folks. Not a pre-64, not a Classic Laminated.The gun is the Model 70 Stainless, which was made in .270, .30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, .300 Win Mag and .338 Win Mag from 1992-1994. These were standard with 24" barrels. In .30-06 and .270 ONLY, they were produced with 22" barrels in 1992 then that length was discontinued in that model.You have the 1992 production Winchester 70 Stainless with the 22" barrel, no doubt. At this point in time, there is no discernable premium. $350-$400 retail. Perhaps in 20 years, or so!

I think maybe you need to look again... Are you looking up the "sporter" stainless model 70, AntiqueDr? My letter from Don Pind at Winchester specifically says that these guns were not supposed to have been produced.[This message has been edited by fly (edited 12-20-2001).] 0 -
The Model 70 Sporter was the standard-issue Model 70 put out by US Repeating Arms. The Model 70 Stainless was the stainless/composite version of that rifle.

I will sell you 3 more of your RARE rifles if ya want me too, The featherweight barrel on a stainless receiver is no more unusual than any other stainless, what would make it rare is if it had the 20" featherweight barrel,They only made the is these calibers and these numbers: 75 produced in 30'06, 50 in 7 mm rem mag, and 50 in 308, if you have a 270 with featerweight stamped on the barrel and it measures almost 19" from the receiver to the muzzle, then I can get it confirmed as being RARE, because they never produced one with a 20" barrel, only 22" barrels, they made them in 30'06, 270, 308, and some other calibers that slip my mind at the moment, If ya want I probally have one of the best references for Model 70 serial numbers, If you call Winchester again, ask for their Historian, he can take your serial number, and tell you when it was shipped, and to whom, if it is in the database, he can even give you the original warranty registar

okay. I am only going to explain this one more time... These guns have a stainless barrel that is 22" which has engraved on the right side of the barrel the word "featherweight" in script lettering, not stamped, which is sitting on a black composite "sporter" stock and has a push feed receiver. If anyone has any literature on these particular guns then I would like to see it. 0 -

Antiquedr...he just doesn't get it! But given that I think fly should ask a minimum of $30,000 apiece. Of course he will never sell them for more than $425, but he can go around telling people he has two $30,000 guns. Think of all the people he will impress with those very valuable guns!Fly, Sorry you don't have the mother load of all Winchesters, you should listen to the antique doctor; he has forgotten more about rare guns than most of us know. FLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY........ are you listening, ask yourself how we knew they were 22" barrels if they were a mistake? I have the same 3 guns as you have, and I'll let you have them cheap, say $5000 a peice, and I'll write you a letter for free. I agree with everyone else......Antique Dr is a certified gun crank and know of what he speaks, trust him, me I am a model 70 nut, I have over 60 of them, and several well put together books by a man named George Madris, he's has forgotten more about winchesters than you or me will ever know. P.S I have 2 model 70's with 20" carbine barrels that are stainless/synthetic, look them up and see what ya find, I am curious to this scroll writing on the barrels, I looked at several of my Madris books and didn't see any scroll lettering, just a block lettering, Antique Dr, have you seen this?
