firelapping
Is there any benifit to firelapping a barrel or am I just better off seasoning the long slow process?

I believe firelapping means coating bullets with a special abrasive and shooting 20 or so to smooth out the barrel.I just want someone who does it to let me know how much it helps grouping. Is it worth doing really?Eric 0 -
Gun Tests did an article on firelapping this year. I can't remember the issue, but they got impressive groups from guns with rough bores once firelapped. If you have a surplus gun with a rough or dark bore, firelapping may help. If your gun is modern, relatively new and from one of the major manufacturers it is probably already about as smooth as it will get. If you can push a tight cleaning patch through the bore with relatively little resistance, don't try firelapping. 0 -
Firelapping will improve groups but will also decrease velocity. That doesn't matter for paper shooting, but at distance on an animal may matter. I have heard of 100fps and more decreases. A small amount of throat erosion is the culprit. hope this helps your decision. 0 -
I have fire laped 3 Rifles and have NOT seen any change, in ease of cleaning or smoothness or accuracy, all so did no harm to rifle. 0
