I would go with the 7mm rem mag. I just bougt one of these for caibou. it is a flat shooter that will definantly reachout there and the kick isnt to bad comparble to 30.06 kick

A couple of questions need be answered before a choice could wisely be made. Do you plan to use the gun for hunting? If so, the caliber would be influenced by the type of game. What do you consider long range? If 200 to 300 yards is the max. then a .223 or similar cartridge would be adequate. If you go to a .30 cal and the range is greater than .30-'06 could handle, I think a 300 Winchester magnum would be a better choice than the obsolescent .300 H & H. I have never used a .50 Barrett but I believe they are very heavy and expensive to shoot.

Long range to me is 500 to 1000 yds. Rifle will not be used for hunting. I would want to use the bullet with the highest Ballastic coefficient in its caliber. 150 gr. in 270, 160 gr. in 7MM, 200 gr. in .30 caliber.

A bull barreled .300 H&H. Take a look at the Camp Perry record book for the 1000 yd trophys. Yes, it is obsolete. So are B-52s.

Don't laugh.Look at what wins at Perry at 600 yards.AR15 with 80 grain bullets and good barrel.orSendero in the new Rem 7mm Short Mag would be a damn good choice in a bolt gun.I have a Rem 700 SA and can't wait to see if the bolt face can be opened enough.cpermd

Take a look at this 25-06 Remington Sendero. http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=2708970 Reasonably low cost rifle when you consider it includes a 2 lb. trigger job. Further, it is a low recoiling rifle that will reach out and tag your target. This may fulfill all your requirements. This rifle is capable of hitting 600 to 800 meter targets and not wear your shoulder out. The 7mm and 30 caliber mags will do a job on your shoulder by the end of the day.Boomer

First off, I would personally not go below 7mm for the distance. The wind is always a factor. Most of the benchrest competitors I have talked to on the 1000yd circuit don't use any less. If you really want to get the 1000yd power, buy a magnum action like a Rem700 or Win70 used. Like a beat up one at a show or in the paper. Get it trued by a gunsmith, get him to cut you a 28-30" stainless barrel, say contour .875 or .920" and chamber it in 30-378 weatherby mag. throw a nice stock on it and go. The triggers on these actions are adjustable, this will initially save you $275 on the trigger. Get used to shooting it, and next year put in a jewell when money is right. The 30-378 will outshine most others on the 1000yd line with trajectory and horsepower. Better be prepared to reload though. $72/box. Buy them once, reload them 10 times.

.338 Lapua Magnum for 1000 yard shooting and beyond. .300 Win Mag 1000 yards and below that distance. Many of the customs are not worth the effort required when there are already some great calibers out there. Beach

I have tried several calibers for long range shooting and it all depends on what you want from your rifle. I have a 223 rock river lower with a target trigger and a lothar-walther heavey barrel. i use 52 grain match rounds. these are very accuate out to 600 yards for prairie dogs and coyotes. The magnums are always the best long range rounds and the best is 300 win mag. There are more choices in bullet weights and bullet choices. I have found out not all ammunition is created equal. It takes trail and error to find the right match for your rifle. You will also need to spend alot on the scope, because you will only shoot as well as your scope lets you. Springfield, luepold, nikon, burris etc. I have several rifles and each one has its purpose. I never have liked the 6,7 or 8 MM rifles but thats me. I figure that 223, 243 308 and 30-06 ammunition is the most available out there and the cheapest so if you plan on doing alot of shooting take that into consideration. It is also hard for me to find sites in whioch i can shoot over 500 yards and you will need to check that out for yourself. If its was me i would buy a remington 700 BDL in 300 win mag. Buy a 6x18 nikon and get several different brands of ammunition and try sighting it in. You cant go wrong with Federal premium, winchester supreme and remington core-lok. Hope this helps. Good luck shooting

Large capacity cases and heavy bullets will beat you up unless you have a heavy rifle. They are also the best to buck wind over long distances. If you dont want to go the 30+ cal large powder cap.route consider a 6.5 x 284 I fired one in 100yard h.p. comp worked nicely. The 6 br with a 8 twist bbl. and 107 gr vld is not a bad lr choice it certainly wont shoot your fillings loose.
