I have a colt ace with the serial #sm31805 in mint condition. My question is what is this gun worth? I have been told different things pertainig to this serial # in the book it estimates only 13,000 made so I need help. Thanks everyone who responds. 0 -
I seem to see them SELLING for between $750 and $1000. Whether they're really WORTH that is another matter, as it seems that Colts tend to command a premium these days and people are willing to pay. I think the blue book values tend to run toward the lower end of that range. 0 -
You have your x'd serial number at the wrong end! The first few digits are necessary to determine the age, which greatly affects the value. A Pre-War is worth a lot more than a reintroduction post-1978. An early post-1978 reintroduction is worth more than a later gun. Post the first few digits and that will help determine the age. 0 -
JudgeColt is right, the pre-wars are definitely worth more than the "modern" ones of the late '70s/early '80's. I assumed the SM prefix serial number was a newer iteration, therefore the $750 - $1000 range. I've seen pre-wars go for around $2000. So what IS the correct serial number range? Is it SM79XXX or something earlier? If one does not wish to reveal the actual serial number, it is accepted practice to "X" out the last few digits, NOT the first few digits. Without the first few digits, the age cannot be determine because there is a "79" in every one hundred pistols. For instance, I have a very early Service Ace that I might quote the serial number as SMXX because it is a two-digit gun. If the pistol were in the thirty range, I might even quote the serial number as SM3X. If it were a three digit gun, I might quote the number as SM3XX. If it were a four digit gun, I might quote the number as SM35XX. If it were a five digit gun, I might quote the number as SM353XX, etc.. If the last two digits of the serial number were 35, it would mean nothing to quote the number as SMXXX35. 0 -
Then what you are saying is my Colt Ace with the seriel # 78XX is pre-war? Correct? 0 -
I've seen nice pre war ones go for 2000 at auction 0
