It should work fine, unless you have one that is off for some reason, which is not that common. The bases are made to fit particular rifles, and you use high, medium or low rings depending upon the scope you want to use.BUT, you cannot buy just any bases and rings and fit them to every rifle you own. There is some over lap, for example bases for large ring Mausers will fit the old Harrington and Richardson 300 Ultra, but even then there are two different configurations of the screw holes for the rear base.Consider putting Talley bases and rings on, no stronger rings made. Uhh,..you are not talking about M-70 bases fitting M-700 rifle ,and visa versa..are ya?Cause that wont work! But if you are talking about all Weaver two piece bases for M-700 fitting all M-700s..that`s different..218

for 218beekeep,yes, i guess this is what i mean, if i buy, lets say weaver bases for an remington 700,will the same bases fit a winchester 70, or are the screw holes in different locations that the bases will not line up.

They will not fit. You need to buy bases for different model of rifle. There are a few exceptions as I noted above. The Styer Mod. 96 SBS uses the same bases as the Browning A-bolt rifles. The rings generally have a list telling which rifles they fit if you are looking at over-the-counter types. High end bases and rings like Conotrol or Talley do not, but the folks you order from can tell you which rifles. besides the one you are fitting, the rings will work on.
