Try Oxpho-Blue from Brownells. Wipe it on and use 000 steel wool to blend with whats left of the old blueing. Wipe off with rag and repeat if necessary. Oil and rust do not have to be taken off first but I usually try to remove rust first anyway.Hope this helps and you should get a few more responses from folks that have good experience with another cold blueing chemicals. This works for me.b

I'm not happy with any cold blueing I've tried it looks good for a while but pitts in the cabinet. When I find it I'm pissed.the original (old finnish stuff seems fine with an occational wipe of oil).If its rusty use it if not oil it.

My 2 cents worth.Hot Blue....Never had any of the cold blue that would penatrate deep enough to last. Have good results from hot blue on all the blackpowders I have built with the messy smelly hot blue. But it had to be clean clean clean to prevent spotting and streaking.

I've used several of them and call Brownell's Oxpho Blue the best. Much better than the others but none are really comparable to a proper hot blue or old slow cold rust blue.
