A silencer may not be what you need. The crack you hear may be your pellet going supersonic - nothing will fix that other than slowing down the pellet. I don't know what the heaviest pellets available for a partculat caliber but you might try the heaviest pellet you can find to keep the velocity down.tilapia

I know what you mean. Every now and then I have to discretely execute a bird that is making a pest of himself around the house without blasting him and upseting the neighborhood. Usually it's a blue jay thats taken to swooping down at the kids. I use an old Benjamin pump up air gun with just a few pumps. you might try agila calibri shells.,and a bolt 22. burnt gun powder cools, compressed air doesn't. check for accuracy too the ones I tried weren't to good but they have more varieties now. also standard shorts are quieter than some air guns.

CCI used to make a rimfire (.22) round called "CB Caps". They were subsonic and, out of my Remington bolt, were quiet as a whisper. A little noisier out of a revolver. I have no idea as to velocity, trajectory, etc.

Thanks, guys -I saw a pellet gun made in the UK I believe-called a "scorpion" that had a silencer, and that was the reason for my question about the legalities. You've all given me some good advice, I'll do some checking into the .22 idea. (My pellet gun is a .177)Jim

Having had the same problem with crows and squirrels some years back, I tried various light 22 loads in a Ruger 10/22.The best were CBs with headstamp HS(or SH) closely followed by Ely CB caps. The 22 short low velocity by Rem and Win Super-X were ok but louder. CCI CB caps in the LR case werent so hot, probably because I was firing downward and the powder got too far from the priming.Today, Im in a similar situation having an abundance of lawn digging squirrels and tree-hugging neighbors on both sides. A pump up Benjamin 177 pistol works if you can hit em.

The suppressor ("silencer") statutes of which I am aware refer to devices designed to to be attached to "firearms" so a device attached to a non-firearm, such as an air rifle, would not be an illegal device under such statutes. However, that is just my opinion based on limited knowledge of some statutes, and may not apply to all statutes, which could apply to devices attached to non-firearms. There is also the possibility that the definition of "firearm" in some places may include air guns, even though logic says it should not.Tell us more about this suppressed air gun you mention.

In reviewing the other posts, I see several references to using firearms for the pest control desired. Before doing that, it would be prudent to check the laws on discharge of firearms in city limits, and within a certain distance from occupied structures, highways, etc.. Many cities have ordinances prohibiting discharging air guns, sling shots, arrows, etc. as well. It may also be illegal to destroy the animals you seek to eliminate. (Squirrels have a season in many states, and some species are protected.) A neighbor who loves the animals you are trying to eliminate could cause you trouble by reporting your activities.

Before you get too fired up about airgun sound suppressors, you should know that ATF has made a determination that several commercially available suppressors designed for paintball guns are considered silencers and are subject to the NFA.Proceed at your own risk.

I have the british scorpian that you mentioned, it is a high quality target air pistol.single shot, .22 cal. It appears to have a silencer on it, but mine does not. it is actually a composite extension that fits on the end of the barrel to give you more leverage when cocking it, as it is pump action. I have personally never seen a silencer on a pellet gun, but perhaps "scorpian" makes them, and I am just not aware of it.

The Scorpion you refer to was a pistol made by BSA of the UK in the late 1970's.

The cocking sleeve mentioned is a cocking aid and serves no use other than that.

Being a Southpaw I found a Scorpion extremely difficult to use because of the ergonomic right handed grip, but it was a fun gun to use.

Bah @ pistol banning in the UK, can I move to America?
