ruger mini 14
I heard and read many pros and cons with the mini 14. I was looking to make mime more practicle with some tactical applications i.e. railings, adjustable stock, optics. What do you experts think?
Should I attempt this or should I sell it and get something else?
What aftermarket mags do you recommend?
thanks

What would be a good scope to put on a ruger Mini 14? 0 -
There is the plain Mini-14 and the Mini-14 Ranch. The ranch comes with scope rings and the reciever is cut for them. 0 -
Robo, I'm a newbie here, but I have the advantage of a Ruger catalog on my lap. Not only do you need to decide on regular or ranch, there's blued (wooden stock), stainless (wooden stock), and all-weather stainless (synthetic black stock). Ruger claims that including the rings with the ranch model is a $50 value. I would like to get one of those eventually myself, but I'm not there yet in proficiency or budget. I have read both good and bad things about them, but if you take care of it (clean after use), you should be fine. Just my luck when I'm ready to get one, they'll be outlawed![This message has been edited by Gordian Blade (edited 12-12-2001).] 0 -
Check out the Ar-15. I have a Mini 14 ranch in stainless with the Butler Creek synthetic pistol grip folding stock and a Burris Compact scope. I have hi-cap mags made by Eagle/Millet, USA, Ramline, Precision. The Ramline, Precision, and Eagle work great...the USA mags are junk. The Mini-14 is simple and uses a reliable action. It works great as long as you use good mags. Cons: Heavy and inaccurate. The Barrel gets way too hot!!I also have a Bushmaster M4 Carbine A3 config w/ mini y-compensator. The carry handle is removable, which allows you to mount a scope on an intergal rail. The AR-15 is much better than the Mini. It come with a pistol grip and takes the Plentyful 30 round GI mags. The AR is light and accurate. Much more tactical. Chances are you won't have your rifle caked w/ mud and sand....so a clean AR will be very reliable. There are many different AR configurations available. There is bound to be one that suits your needs. There are plenty of accessories available.Comming from experience, save up and buy an AR. Bushmaster is the way to go.
A good quality pre-ban AK is a good way to go also. Pistol grip and 7.62x39. Plenty of 30 round mags and drum mags. Plenty of accessories. It is a weapon that will rarely jam up and not function. Its a rock and roll weapon. The FN Fal variants are also great weapons. Pistol grip, .308 cal, plenty of 20 round mags available. It is a hardcore weapon.
If you want a .223 cal gun. Get the AR-15.If Caliber does not matter, Look into the FN Fal variants and AK'sMy choice would be: FN Fal, AK-47, AR-15....and leave that mini 14 alone.[This message has been edited by Diablo (edited 12-13-2001).]0 -

Me TOO!! not as accurate as I would have liked for the money. 0 -
Take close notice of the comment about USA mags and buy accordingly. The Mini-14 is a fun gun; but they are notoriously inaccurate. FYI...the rear sight on the Mini-14 is much superior to the one on the Ranch Rifle...which they expect you will scope. If you want a plinker and don't plan to scope it, get the plain Mini-14 for less money and better sight.I agree about the FN clones. I have an L1A1 and really like it. 0 -
I had a mini 30 what a pos! I sold it an bought a ak-47. It is my favorite gun and it was $100 cheaper! If you want a .223 get an ar-15. I like the 7.62 round though. You can hunt deer with it. 0
