The serial # on this gun leads me to say that it is an early production 2nd generation sa.The mfg. date is confusing 1972 to 1975.Anyway early production 45sa list in the blue book for 98% 1875.00 95% 1500.00 90% 1200.00.Keep in mind a 98% gun is just about perfect.no scratches no rust no wear on the blueing and shot very little if at all.I have guns that have never been fired that come in at the 95% level just from handling. The later date production, mid range 98%1350.00 95%1100.00 90%1000.00 Late 2nd. gen. 98%1150.00 95% 1000.00 90%900.00.Hope this helps. This is all helping a great deal many thanks gentlemen, I neglected to put in he purchased the gun in 1955 so that would make it a second generation , I am learning. The barrel is 7 1/2 inches, I was not measuring correctly. Condition I would have to send a picture , but I am not seeing any wear and it is well oiled and cared for. Thanks for taking you time and I would be glad to return the favor if I ever canRob

Your friends' SAA was made in 1957, the second year of production for the 2nd generation. The barrel is 7 1/2" measured from the barrel end to front of cylinder. My guess is it's worth about $1500.

Saxon, you are probably right. I haven't been watching the market but I do know the early 2nd gen SAAs sell at a premium and fortunately I have a 5 1/2, 45, s/n 14238SA. It sounds like the writer is preparing to make an offer and $1500 could be a start. My 1999 Firearms by Schwing shows $1800 nib and $1250 for excellent. Having the original box, brush and paperwork is a +$.

This is a great group thanks for all the information, I am going to list it here as I am selling it for another person, I have also found out he purchased it and it was a first issue of the second generation. I am going to put it up at 1750 and entertain offers. I am photographing the piece to send to those interested , if any of you who have helped me want a special price let me know, think I have my ducks in a row now , thanks a million and if I can ever research any antiques or pottery let me know it would be my pleasure to help yourob139@home.com
