Is there a little set screw on the top left side of the reciever?if yes, remove it and the bolt should slide out the rear. It's a very basic shot-gun, probably sold through a Sears or Montgomery Wards store in the 1950's (Sears is actually "recalling"--just the bolts--of the 12 guage version they sold).Might be worth $150, perhaps more to someone seeking to recapture some sort of childhood memories....

By any chance does this shotgun have a barrel band that holds the magazine to the barrel, reminiscent of a Win. 94?

Just a note of caution - This is not first hand experiance to me, but I have heard some very bad stories about J.C. Higgins bolt action shotguns. Has to do with very weak metal around the bolt/receiver area where the bolt locks up. (Could be the bolt recall mentioned above) As it was told to me they are all bad and the bolt can come back into the shooters face. If you do shoot it, I would pay close attention to that area.

GHS,On the 12 guage, the little screw is the only thing retaining the bolt--some of these screws were brittle; if they snap while the bolt is being cycled with the shotgun "shouldered" while one is sighting down the barrel--you get an eyeful of bolt! That's the only reason for the "recall" that I've heard of. I've heard nothing about problems with the lock-up when the gun is fired. And the 20 gauge was not part of the recall--and it appears the bolts "coming out" are not a problem. Does the recall for the bolt apply to the 16 ga. as well? I just picked one up.
    Thanks in advance.

Really been digging around in the archives...

To answer your question, Nick, everything Sears has told me, indicates that ONLY certain series of the 12 gauge models were suject to the "recall".
