Turkish Mauser
Got a Turkish Mauser and would like to rebarrel it don't know if it is large ring or small ring, how do you tell? Like to stay with 8mm cal but can change it need to. So any info out there would be helpful. Thanks[:)]

In Gun List SOG offers Turkish Mausers at $39.95. Is this the same as the German Mauser 98 used in WWI and WWII? Same 8x57 round? I know the Turks and Krauts were in bed in WWI and wonder about buying one. Any info much appreciated. Thanks, Robert 0 -
The Turkish 1938 rifles are large ring '98 actions. They are not the specific rifle used by the Germans, but share the '98 action in common. Apparently the Turks started a program in the late 1930s to standardize all of the many slightly different model Mausers they had acquired over the previous 40 years, starting with the 1891s, 1893s, lots of W.W.I 1898s--all with different barrel lengths and furniture. They established an arsenal named Kirkkale which rehabed many of the older weapons and manufacuted new rifles of the 1938 pattern. You will see the name abbreviated "K.Kale" on the receiver rings of these rifles along with the date of maufacture and "Ankara" the name of the city in Turkey (also the Capital). This is probably the last very large number of surplus Mausers that will appear on the market, and don't let the price fool you. The actions are great for sporterizing, or for use as-is. Don't buy one, buy at least two and put one away for that future project. Certainly there will be small lots of Mausers turning up for the next few years, but just look at the prices of others being offerred now. Gunsmiths have been acquiring these by the dozen because prior to the import of these rifles good '98 actions alone went for $65 up to $125. I'm sure the Turks were considering the possibility of entering W.W.II, but wisely remained neutral. The results were that many of the 1938 rifles show more carrying than firing. The ammo that is currently available for them at bargain basement prices is clean, surefire, and corrosive (so clean your rifle well) and seems a little hotter than most. One large distributor that I do business with has already sold out of these rifles--so don't wait too long. If you go back through past posts you will probably find the topic of both the rifles and ammo discussed pretty well. 0 -
Yes and yes. But, they are in pretty worn shape. Most of the receivers are in fair to good shape, but most of the barrels are shot.
