Yes you can. You can also get a .22 conversion for them from Jonathan Authur Ciener, Inc. One frame, 3 guns. Neat deal!

I think the M96D is double action only, so it would not be possible to change a M92FS, which it traditional double action, to to a M96 double action only by merely changing the slide. I think the firing mechanism is different. However, it is possible to change a Model 92 9mm Beretta to an equivalent to a Model 96 .40 S&W Beretta by changing the slide, and probably the recoil spring. Even the magazines are physically the same, although the followers and springs are different in post ban.

The reason I was asking is because I have the 96D complete slide assembly already. I have used it just once with one magazine and it functioned perfectly except for the recoil spring which seemed to be a little too much on the soft side. Recently, I was told that the 92 and the 96 series have different frames which completely boggles me. Furthermore, having a "D" version slide on an "F" frame was supposed to not be compatible. Which brings me to my question. Why not? the only difference seems to be the absence of a safety? I do not recall encountering a problem of sorts when I mated it to my FS. If the problem would be decocking the hammer like the way the D automatically does, you can hold the hammer and ease it down manually. The primary use of this slide is not for carry, but rather for practice. I know and remember well the lessons told from the courses I took through the years, and am looking for input so I can do what I have to with this slide assembly in case someone proves it dangerous.thanks for your replies,-Smooth

I changed a 92DA from double action only. Is no problem to do.

jeenyes:Did the change require changing any fire control parts? I would assume the DAO hammer would have no full-cock notch, and a SA/DA hammer would have to be substituted. Right? How about the trigger and sear?

    I used the same trigger.

What about the hammer? Is it the same on the DAO and SA/DA?

JudgeColt,The hammers are different. The DAO does not have the sear catch for single action cock.

Thank you. That is my point. I did not think merely changing the slide would change the mode of fire. What keeps the following hammer from firing the cartridge? Perhaps the geometry of the slide controls the hammer follow so it will not fire the cartridge as it follows the slide down.

Ok, point taken. Thanks for the insight everyone posted in this thread, it is greatly appreciated...now if I can only sell this thing for what I paid for it.-Smooth

This is exactly what I do, only in reverse. I started out with a 96D and got hold of a 92FS slide and barrel. Works great. Obviously the decocker can't work on a DAO, but the safety does. Going the other way should work too, except there is no manual safety at all. The mags are totally compatible, the only diff is where holes are drilled in them for you to count how many rounds are left inside.
