Older .22 Savage, Worth? Age?
I recently recieved a new to me .22 from my father-in-law. It is a full stocked .22 rifle maufactured by Savage. It's bolt action and has a 5-rnd detachtable mag. The barrel is stamped "NRA Match" and sports what to me suspiciously looks like Lyman peep sights.I'm pretty sure it is a Model 19, but definetly not a standard model--any ideas on how old what it's worth ect.?? Thanks!

Matt- does the bolt cock on opening or closing? The model 19/33 cocks on opening, the earlier 19NRA cocks on closing. The 19 NRA has the full-length military style stock, and the one that I have has a small peep sight dovetailed near the back end of the receiver, with 2 holes in lieu of a detachable aperture disc. The later 19/33 is a great shooting rifle. I have 2 of them, and they have the Lyman 19Y peep in the rear, which mounts on top of the receiver with 2 screws, and extends beyond the end of the receiver. Also has the Lyman 17 front aperture sight. 0 -
NRA Match,19,23-A,These are nice little rifles, all using the same one piece barrel/action..note the barrel/action is one piece of pipe all the way back, rather than a barrel screwed into a receiver.Cool, huh?Does your clip have a little button-like do-hicky on the bottom?..if so those clips are worth at least 80 bucks if you can find one.usualy there is a hole where the do-hicky was...like on four of my rifles .218 0 -
BeeKeep-Yup it does have the do-hicky, button thingie, clip-a-ma-bob last-one-I-saw-at-a-gun-show-was-$95.00-whatchamacallit!That alone makes me soooooooo happy! As far as lokking at the rifle I am too dang tired to go downstairs and go through the "OPENING OF THE DAMN GUN SAFE RITUAL"So I'll do that tomorrow when Mrs. Matt45 is looking for volunterrs for KP duty.Happy Turkey day all!!!!

OK, from buttplate to muzzle-<P>The buttplate is steel and has the Savage "Indian head logo".<BR>The SN is 26XXX, stamped on the rear of the tube that makes up the barrel and reciever.<P>The bolt action cocks when it is locked to the foward and down position.<BR>The 5 Rnd mag is marked "Savage Sporter".<BR>The sights are a 2 knob affair with a single apeture. The left side is marked "25, 15, & 150" the right, "50, 100, & 200". It is mounted on a tang and at the very rear of the rifle. The front sight is a simple blade.<BR>The top of the barrel is marked <BR>"Manfactured by the Savage arms corp, Utica NY USA"<BR>"Patented NOV 28, 1905, Sep 7 1915, Sep 4 1917, Nov 20 1917"<BR>To the left of these two lines "SAVAGE-N.R.A.<BR>MATCH RIFLE"<BR>The finish is 50% on the buttplate and there are two worn spots above the ejection port, so overall I'd say the finish on the Barrel itself is 90-95%<P>The sling on the rifle is also curious, it is Tan in color, and is 1" wide. cotton I guess. On one end the Metal tab is stamped "PAT'D. 7.21.14" Below this "NOBUCKLE" and below that "REG.U.S. PAT. OFF"<P>I hope that is enough to determine what this puppy is and what it's worth.<P>Thanks guys...<P>Matt 0 -

BeeKeep-ANYONE who GIVES me a firearm is a great guy!Hehehe, And even though my collection is small it takes just a little short of an act of God to get me to let one go once I've got it. Interesting side note is the he also gave me a Colt Woodsman, complete with spare mag and papers-95% bluing and a really low serial number, methinks, offhand it may have been originally purchased by my wife's grandad right around the end of the WW 1.BTW both of these pieces shoot like I can't believe. The Savage put 5 rounds in 1" at 75 yds offhand. The Woodsman hits everything I shoot at.

You got a great father-in-law!
I'ld be cautious shooting high-speed ammo in a unconverted early (Pre 1933) Woodsman though, here's a site that tells everything you want to know about the Colt. This guy has put a lot of outstanding work and effort in it.
