russian m44 oily mess
just bought a russian m-44 from inter ordanance very very nice gun but compleatly full of oil/grease what a mess how does one go about cleaning this thing up and geting the oil out of the stock and making it look like a gun again

Yep, it really is a mess, ain't it?Depends how much you want to refinish it. If you just want to make the gun useable, take off the barrel and stock hardware. Degrease the metal with WD40, Kerosene, whatever is on hand. As for the stock, wiping it down with paper towels, spay heavily with WD40, and wipe down again. If you don't mind it seeping out of the stock when you shoot, this is enough treatment. If you want all the grease gone, there are a few things to try. I boiled my stock in a bleachy, degreaser based bucket of water for five hours to clean it. Worked great, but left the wood looking a bit parched. You can also try holding it over a dry heat like from a paint stripper gun or over a stove burner if you are carful. Grease will bubble up. If you can, lock it in a car on a really hot day wrapped in black cloth or plastic; that will sweat out a lot as well.

I work in an extremely oily environment. Often we'll put things in a box of speedy dry or kitty litter over the weekend to get oil out of it. We do this with tools with wooden handles and shoes even. You might try this with the stock. Also if that doesn't work you can order something called whiting from Brownells . 0 -
If you use the kitty litter, just make sure no kittys have access to it--could end-up with a smelly mess that way! 0 -
Oven cleaner works great on the stocks, be sure and wear your gloves and let it soak in.Gun control is hitting your target !! 0 -
Hey, Jonk pretty much hit it on the head. But, one other thing you can do that wont really screw things up on the stock is to use rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol on the the inletted portions, trying not to get much on the finish, though it wont do immiediate damage if you do. This helps thin the grease and bring it out of the wood prior to doing what Jonk suggested, and he is right, it works. By the way, I use carbuerator cleaner on the greasy messy things myself, works like a champ and very cheap and high power nozzle.
