Can someone tell me about this rifle?
Hi - we recently were given a rifle that is marked "1862 U.S. Springfield". It belonged to my husband's grandfather. He found it when he moved into a house in Massachusetts. The previous owners had left it in a closet. We are assuming it is a Civil War rifle - but know nothing else about it. We would love to hear some more information - thanks for any help!

Interesting, my dad brought me a similiar one, but with 1863 Stamped behind the hammer, an eagle with a shield in front of the hammer, and U.S. Springfield Stamped on it.Mine's not really a collector piece, as the stock has a bad hairline crack which was repaird with a wood plug, but it looks good over the fireplace. 0 -
Can you describe it better. Is it a trapdoor or is it a bolt action?pccano@mail.esc4.com 0 -
Judging by the lockplate, it's not a bolt action, but it could have been converted into a trapdoor, though I think most Allin conversions also carried 1865 or 66 dates on the breech. Anyhow, it would have started life as a Model 1861 muzzle-loading, .58 calibre percussion rifle. 0
