Winchester model 1885 (?)
Any info on a Winchester with "patented Oct 7, 1879" amd 22 short on barrel. US & the flaming bomb on top aft of hammer with 124367 on btm aft of lever. I believe it was a marksmanship training weapon due to its weight (heavy for a 22) and swivels located on the stock. Any info appreciated. Thanks.

You have the third model of the Winchester 1885 Low Wall Musket with a full length stock, one barrel band,a special rear sight, coil spring action and blued finish. These rifles are also known as the 'Winder Musket'. You are correct that these rifles were used by U.S. military forces for indoor, short range rifle practice. These rifles are reasonable common. In completely original condition prices range from $400-$1000 starting with a real dog to like new condition. Any alterations such as missing or replaced rear sight, cut stock and holes for scope blocks will lower the value. I have two of these muskets and at 50 feet, the distance at which they were ment to be used, they will keep all shots in one ragged hole on the N.R.A. 50 foot targrt. Production ended in 1920. 0
