I put a Burris 4-16x44 signature series with the red dot on mine. I want to say they are around $485 in NATCHEZ catalogue. We shoot 300+ yds across the bean fields here on the Eastern Shore of MD and the scope performs beautifuly. Crisp clear picture even with the heat distortions. I took a VARI-X III off when I bought it and don't miss it one bit. The red dot pays for itself the first time you have a shot just when it is too dark to see the crosshairs on the black shadow that just appeared in the field in front of you. Turn her on and sharpen your knife!!

Poor guy. I should have your problems!I agree about the Burris, either in 4-16x or 3-9x, depending on personal preference. I like being able to really see detail, like small spikes, to determine what the animal is, so I would opt for the 4-16x (older eyes need all the help they can get). For shooting to 300 yards, 9-10x is about all you need in order to keep your field of view wide enough for a moving critter. The lower power scopes are waht I would want on a dangerous animal gun where you may need a quick, close shot. But for your purposes, I think a 4-14x in a GOOD quality like Burris, Leupold, or other brand would be a perfect solution.
