Rice? as brass cleaner

Hey guys I got a tip yesterday and wondered if any of you had heard of, or tried it.I was looking for walnet shell media, couldn't find it, and the gunsmith said to try WHITE RICE! Said he used it all the time.Understand; my leg is easly pulled and I've become just a little skeptical.Thanks for the help

  Works great! I use it primarily in a rotary tumbler to clean and polish bullets after swaging them. Also a super degreaser after sizing cases. I have used whole wheat in exactly the same way. 50lb bag at feed store is around $5-$6.00 and works just as good. However, have to make sure it is clean. Some places seem to think that whole wheat means mostly wheat and what ever else they decide to put in the bag to make 50lbs.

  Yep....works great. Used to use it in a tumbling machine.....just make sure you do it before you pop out the primers, or you'll have to pick rice grains out of the primer holes and pockets. It's also a good idea to blow out the brass with compressed air afterwards.

  Are you guys using it straight from the bag or are you adding activator to it?? Here's a tip from me. I broke down some old steel shot loads that had gotten wet threw the shot in with my media. It really helps geting some of the hard residue out. I shoot alot of Black Powder reloads so It really does work. I use a rotary tumbler.

  woodsrunner - Aren't you concerned with the "peening" effect the steel shot'll have on your brass? I'd think this "additive" would - in time - further work harden the cases you process this way....Non-ammoniated brass polish, yes. I've even resorted to coarse hardwood sawdust (with brass polish added) in a pinch, but steel shot?

  So far I've had no problems with any peening affect. I try to run the tumbler nearly full and it's only a few ounces of shot. I know a reloading component dealer that uses a mix of steel shot and ceramic balls with his corn cob media. Many of the black powder cartridge guys I know tumble with BB's in a soapy water mix. Black powder residue in your cases is nasty stuff to get rid of. Worse than any smokeless I've encountered[This message has been edited by woodsrunner (edited 10-30-2001).]
