Kropatschek question- this one will really test ya'll
I mentioned in an earlier post that i got an 8mm Portuguese Kropatschek. I have read that this gun is chambered for 8X60Rmm ammo. Ok, thought I, so I set about looking for this oddball size to try the gun before starting into reloading. Then, reading a back issue of Shotgun news from July, the author of the piece at the start indicated in no uncertain terms that a short time later, Portugal modified the 8X60Rmm by trimming it down to 8X56Rmm, using semi smokeless and then smokeless powder (not to be confused with 8X56 used in straight pulled Mannlicher/Steyrs). The article then says that Portugal did NOT rechamber the rifle as the shorter cartridge fed into the chamber fine, but merely altered the sights. This implies that the 1886 Kropatschek can fire either 8X60Rmm or 8X56Rmm. Ok, so I still am not too confused... so then I dig out my copy of the Handloader's guide to cartridge conversions. This suggests that the lenth to shoulder is different in each case, and the shoulder angle is different. Yet it does note that the 8X56Rmm is for "Kropatchek tubular mag. rifle about 1886," while noting the 8X60Rmm is for the Castro-Guides, which preceeded the 1886 Kropatschek. BUT I know that the Kropatscheks were, in interest of interchangeability and economics, chambered for the same 8X60Rmm round. SO my question is, what the heck does this rifle shoot? I presume it shoots 8X60Rmm which it was chambered for, but is 8X56Rmm Kropatschek safe to shoot or not?

And the answer to my own question, from 6 1/2 years ago, is yes, 8X56R Kropatschek is safely shot from an 8X60R Kropatschek chamber as the only difference is neck length..... though It rim my brass to 8X60R anyhow. 0
