Pre-'64 Model 70s are highly regarded because of the materials and workmanship that went into them, but especially for the design features that were, for a number of years, absent in Model 70s produced after 1964. Among the more desirable features is the large claw-type extractor which provides controlled feeding from the magazine and positive extraction, as opposed to the push-feed of the later models. Today Winchester is again, by popular demand, producing rifles very similar to the pre-64 model; and mechanically there is little difference between current production and pre-64 models. Actually, both the pre-64 type and the later push-feed models are available. The push-feed was improved from its original version and has also gathered its share of followers. But during the years when the pre-64 style was not being produced the values began to increase with scarcity and demand and today they have become expensive, even though current production is substantially similar.
