Questions about Mossberg 500A
Hi all, I'm thinking about getting my first shotgun and have some questions about the Mossberg 500. Basically, I'd like to have it around the house for home defense, but would also like to take it out to the range to shoot (or field) to shoot slug, clay pigeons, etc. I know a guy that's selling one in good condition for $100. It has a 28" vent-rib barrel (with modified choke) and nice wood and blueing. Is this a good price? Can I shoot slug through this barrel or do I have to get a special slug barrel? Last question, how readily available are shorter barrels for the 500, how much do they cost and how hard are they to install? Thanks!

BUY IT NOW!!!That is an outstanding bargain. Barrels are plentiful and fairly inexpensive and easy to install.Slugs will go through a choke, but will shoot better in a rifled barrel. There is a multitude of accessories and goodies for the 500 series Mossbergs. Pistol grips, stocks, barrels, heat shields, sling swivels. Email me direct and I will see what usable parts I have on hand. davidnunn@texoma.net

$100 sounds almost too cheap; do you know this guy well? If not, get a good receipt with his driver's license number and signature on it, to protect yourself from prosecution if it were by chance stolen. 0 -
It's a pretty good deal depending on condition. They are about $185 new at most big chain type sporting good stores. The Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 have dozens of aftermarket goodies. If you are on a budget, the Moss 500 is the way to go. Leave it as is for just about everything; home, bird hunting, slug shooting with sabots, etc. You can find extra barrels in the $100 range. 0 -
Thanks to all of you for your advice. Lucid and comprehensive, as always. I'll take the precautions recommended, as I am not acquainted with the person. I'm totally geeked to get my first shotgun! Nice to know it's a good one. 0 -
100 bucks is the going rate for a bird barreled mossy around here. I buy em used for 65 to 75 bucks and sell em for $100 most of the time. sometimes I'll buy em and parts them out and make even more money....they really are a great gun for the money 0 -
biganimal: Would you like to procure me 20 or so Mossberg 500s in the $65-75 range, and crate them up and ship them to me. Seriously.

My wife has the Mossberg 500 for self defense. I would highly recommend this shotgun for this purpose. Fortunatley I've never had to use it for it's intended purpose.-Marcus 0
