Early model Winchester 94
I just saw an early model 94 in about 50 - 60% condition, ser #65840 in 25-35 cal. Am I placing this right - 1895 or 96? Also this has the crescent but plate like the model 92, did these come with the crescent? I thought they had the straighter shotgun style butt. They wanted $850.00 ????

Manufactured in 1896. Yes, on the cresent Buttplate. Value depends on many things. Is it a rifle or carbine, what kind of sights, set trigger? Round barrel? Good wood? Sling ring? Screw heads in good order? Was it/is it owned by someone important? In other words, $850 could be a rip-off, a fair price, or a steal. 0 -
I would also be concerned with whether the gun has all original parts on it and make sure it has not been drilled in any places fo sights. Make sure it also has not be reblued. We get alot of guns in and out of our store since we deal in antiques and and these as well as 32swl 's post are many of the things that control the values ofthe old beauties. 0 -
From what my limited memory tells me - It was the rifle (not carbine), had half round/octagonal barrel with full length receiver tube, rear site was buckhorn and a brass raised bead front. No major damage to wood and looks to be in original finish about 60-70%, and metal is silvered with some brown patina some light pitting on surfaces, lets say 50-60%. I did not work the action to look inside as the store owner was not there. 0 -
Ditto on the reblue check. It sounds like $850 may be a fair price. It wouldn't have a pistol grip, or checkering, would it? Most of the time, those 1/2 round barrels had 1/2 magizines: It would pay to closely inspect the barrel to confirm it wasn't turned down from a full octigon. If it was turned down it won't command a price over a shooter's value ($150 for a 25-35 I guess). Also, pitting of any sort is bad news, so that aspect has to be closely checked. That rifle would definately require a revisit and closer inspection. 0 -
Thanks for the replys - I'll have to go back and look a little closer. I was not real interested for myself, but just checking the amount - in case it was something really special. 0 -
The steel buttplatewas standard on the rifles however the shotgun buttplate could be special ordered. also special orders could be had for 1/2 round, magazine length, sights, wood, engraving, barrel length, you name it. A good reference book is George Madis's Winchester book. It has page after page of special order 1894's. That is what makes it so fun. 0
