I can only speak for the ones I have, Desert Eagle semi-auto and a Smith & Wesson Stainless Performance Center 6" with compensator. With some practice 100 yard shots w/open sights should be no problem. Beyond that you may want to use a scope. Practice...practice...practice. I'm sure the other brands are good choices. I tend to think the Rugers are a little bulky and chunky looking. Good Luck.

The ruger redhawk, is a good one, it has the built in scope base, on the topstrap. And the stainless construction is low maintenance.

I have a S&W 629 Classic 5" barrel, and a Colt Annaconda 6" ported barrel. For hunting, of the two I would pick the annaconda because it has a better trigger and locks tighter. The extra inch helps too. Any of those or a ruger or taurus would probably do good for you depending on your budget.

I have a S&W 629 with a 6" and a Ruger Redhawk with a 7 1/2". The S&W has a better trigger, but I prefer the Ruger with the V rear and the gold bead front sight due to the strength of the gun.

My deer gun is a Ruger Super Redhawk, .44mag 9 1/2" barrel topped off with a Leupold 2X fixed scope with Extended Eye Relife. The stainless is a joy to keep clean in any weather.By the way, I had it topped with a 4x scope and changed it to the 2x.

Ruger recently released the Super Blackhawk Hunter again, in stainless. The Super Blackhawk is single action, the Hunter model allows for scope attachment with integral rings. The Redhawk and S&W are double action revolvers. I have never hunted in double action mode and do not know of anyone else that has. So a single action hunting revolver is all I have ever needed. You will have to decide for yourself what you will need. FYI, any Ruger revolver is far stronger than any S&W revolver. Ruger will be able to handle the high pressure rounds and not be adversly impacted. Not so sure about a S&W and high pressure rounds.Regards, Boomer

As with many cartridges, given the proper bullets and shot placement, the .44 Mag is a proven performer on many types of game. Elmer Keith used a S&W many times to demonstrate, virtually at will, that a skilled marksmen could shoot this round accurately to distances of 150+ yards. On deer inside 100 yards the proper ammo (not personal defense HPs) will do the job if you do your part. And that is the key. It's a cliche, but nonetheless true, that bullet placement is far more important than the cartridge in the vast majority of hunting situations. Personally, I do not hunt with a handgun. I'm not that good and I don't have the time or motor skills to reach the level of proficiency I believe is required. But my deer rifle is a .44 and I've never thought I was under-gunned.

I'm not as good a shot as my buddy, but with my Super Redhawk and a Redfield scope, he can hit pint bottles at 75 yd. off a sandbag consistently.
