You can always "download" rounds for a .44 mag. You can get the same performance and have the option of shooting full house mag loads if you ever have the urge.

I've had a Charter Arms Target Bulldog for about 15 years. It is light, adjustable sights and fits my hand. VEry comfortable to carry. Only trouble was a hand binding up, sent it to the factory, they fixed it, test fired it, sent me the target. No charge.I use moderate loads in it. Am tempted to try Keith's load but haven't yet. A real hand stinger, I bet. The bolt cuts are between the chambers so could probably handle heavier loads.

The Charter Arms Target Bulldog 44 is a great light hand cannon that is quite accurate.I have used the heavy Keith 235gr HP handloads. For target practice I prefer a 200gr swc with 5 gr Bullseye.250gr bulletsgive too much recoil for my liking.I have experimented with several grips and the one I prefer is the Charter Arms rubber, modified by grinding the rear of the grip, creating a flat to bear against the palm instead of that sharp edge where the grips meet. This really reduces the hurt of heavy loads by increasing the surface area that acts against your palm in recoil. It also reduces the grips'circumference making for a better hand hold. The single action is very good but the double action isn't.

S&W made a special run of 24's and 624's with a tapered 3" barrel for Lew Horton several years back. I have one of the 624's that is excellent; but it is considerably heavier than the Charter .44. The suggestion of having the flexibility of a .44 Magnum is worth considering. The gun may be a little heavier; but you can go either way with it.

Smith & Wesson make a model 696 stainless, L frame ,3" barrel in a 5 shot. Fine weapon, I have carried mine under my arm for several years while Elk Hunting. Adjustable sights put it head and sholders over Taurus and Charter Arms. Have owned 3 Charters over the years. The 696 is my favorite most packed and most shot handgun.

The Charter Target Bulldog does have adjustble sights. I set them when I bought the gun about 15 years ago and have never had to change zero.
