Wolf Ammo
I heard that Wolf ammo messes up the barrel in your rifle. Is this true, specifically .223. Thanks.[8]

Now i know it is illeagal to hunt with, but i have some wolf 150 grain FMJ ammo for a .308 at 2800 fps. What would be the killing power of that ammo vs. regular hunting that is made for light skinned game like whitetail deer.

I have not personally used it, but on other forums have seen mostly bad opinions. I doubt that any coating would flake off. The steel case would probably be fine on bottle-neck type cartridges that headspace on the shoulder but on straight-walled such as 9mm & 45 the steel would, in my opinion, not be desirable. If you do try it get the new type that has the copper jacket bullet to lessen barrel wear. 0 -
it does have a coating....but doesn't "flake" off. I love wolf....but you have to look at your situation and make the judgement. personally. i wouldnt use it if i had a high priced weapon or were looking for target ammo.....i would however use it (and have) if you have a lower priced weapon or like to pop off the rounds quite quickly. Wolf is a cheaper made ammo, obviously, and thats one reason why its soo cheap. from my personal experience....It works flawlessly in my ak-47, mini-14, and i have heard others say it works really well in ar-15s...as far as pistol ammo goes though....i do not suggest it. 0 -
I supose i've had the lucky batch of wolf ammo. But i have shot thousands of rounds of wolf ammo pistol and rifle without a single problem. None at all 0 -
I have shot wolf .45, .223, .40, 9mm, and not one jam. The 45 acp cycle great thru my glock 21 and my 1911A1. Highly recomend the ammo. 0 -
We've shot hundreds of rounds of Wolf .45 thru both Mrs. Mudge's Glock 30 and my Commander. Also Hundreds of rounds through the ol' M-16 in both Semi and F/A. Not a jam or misfire in any of 'em. No ill effects on the weapons that I've detected.Mudge

I use Wolf 'cause it's cheap and up until a few months ago, never had a problem with any 9, 7.62 x 39 or .223 after thousands of rounds through my sks, mini-14 and S&W model 59 pistol. Last spring, however, I bought 500 rounds of 9 and noticed that the cases of all the cartridges were a different color. Copper-colored, but a little splotchy. Some were kind of discolored. Loaded it up in the Smith and experienced a jam or two about every mag. full. You name it, stovepipes, misfires, even several cases stuck in the barrel. Some guys at the range said it was the gun. Loaded regular green-case Wolf in the Smith, no problem. I think it was just a bad batch of ammo. Maybe sat on the shelf too long. Not sure. The retailer offered to take it back, but I used it up. My Glock 17 ended up chewing through the stuff without a hiccup (not surprised). Will still buy, but now I check each box at the register. 0 -
I've shot ALOT of Wolf 7.62x39 with no problems at all. My advice to you is buy a 1000 rds. and see if you like it.If you don't like it send me what you don't use. 0 -
Was at the pawn shop today, and the lady said she has a lot of people who will use nothing but Wolf. She says they're fanatical about it. I guess it's Russian made, and they like it 'cause it doesn't stove pipe. 0 -
I shoot .45 & 9mm & .223 and never have any problems with anything "flaking" off the steel casings. Wolf's been good for me. 0 -
I have shot tons in my SKS, and like it. The coating is a laquer that is to protect and prolong the shelf life. I read a report where they submerged the stuff in sea water and took it out several weeks later and it all shot well. The laquer was still about 70% intact. I guess if you shot enough to really heat up the barrel, it might melt the laquer, and some will argue that the steel casing is hard on the chamber,bolt and extractor, but for cheap shooting in an inexpensive gun, go for it. 0 -

I only have experience using the Wolf 40 S&W in my HK USP 40. One jam every 15 rounds. Not a single jam with brass cased ammo. From all the replies, it seems Wolf ammo works fine in all other guns except the HK. Weird... 0
