I have a black shadow in 12ga. Two years ago I bought it new for $219 and for another $99 got a rifled barrel as well. It is never mentioned on this board as one of the top choices. I have also shot the 870 in wood stock and the recoil is much less; for the price you mentioned I would go with the 870. The shadow, with it's synthetic stock is very light and recoils a lot in 12. Otherwise it seems fine, but was my choice only for the price for rare hunting in states where rifles are not allowed. If I were planning a lot of wing shooting, I would save for something a little nicer.

I have the model 1300 Defender. It has proven to be an outstanding shotgun. When I took it to my gunsmith to have the left hand safety installed he felt the fit and finish was so good he bought one for himself.

I bought an 870 12 gauge 28" and never had a problem for the 10 years I owned it. I hunted small game and waterfowl with it. I upgraded to a Benelli 2 years ago, because of its camo finish and to have a semi-auto shotgun. I have a 1300 12 gauge turkey gun and it is dedicated just for turkey hunting. The 1300 seems to have a smoother action and is more refined. There is nothing bad about the 870, but I prefer the 1300. I think my next shotgun is going to be the 1300 rifled deer model with the cantilever scope. It is about $120 less than the Remington and is lighter in weight. In closing both are good shotguns and it is a personal preference.

I have a 12g 1300 which I shoot in a trap league (I am a cheap S.O.B.) 4 yrs & 250 boxes thru it. Wooden stock. GREASE the choke tubes in either. Biggest problem I have had is the blueing is wearing thin. And a stuck choke tube, my fault.

I shot a running doe in the base of the neck at about 50 yards two seasons ago, with a rifled 1300 12 guage.I tried to pump it for a second shot,as we do,it would not slide back.So I pushed the realease, and pumped it,a live shell was ejected.Ya see,it slides so smooth ,and fast,I didn`t even know I`d already done it.Mine came tapped, and with a set of good Ironsighter rings/bases,for $239.I like Rems but that win.setup I had was a deer killin machine!!!.218[This message has been edited by 218Beekeep (edited 10-18-2001).]
