Please help with another scope question?
I'm steadily narrowing my choice for an interim scope down but I've got another question, actually a couple:0).Considering I'm going to be shooting my PSS mostly off a bipod or benchrest and only out to 300 yards(100 being most often),is a 50mm objective that much more important or neccessary than a 40mm or say a 44?Also.has anyone had any experience with the Tasco Custom Shop scopes?lastly, what type reticle and magnification would ya'll suggest?I'm leaning towards a mil-dot or duplex with a 3.5-10 or a 4-16 magnification. Thanks to any and all for your help,Josey.

I think it is all personal preference, I use M8 6x42's on all my hunting rifles, but I have 2 tacticals, a PSS, and a Custom Winchester, I have a 4.5 - 14 x 50mm Leupold on the PSS, and a Mark 4 M1 10 x 40 Leupold on the Winchester both in .308, and I prefer the straight 10 x, but again it would be your preference, I have a Tasco World Class 24 power, I took off a gun I bought off gunbroker, I would let you have cheap if all your gonna do is shoot from the bag, I just don't prefer the Tasco's, not that I have ever had a failure or a known of any one who has, I just prefer the Leupolds. I bought a gun once, A Remington VS, that had a Simmons Aetec on it, about $150 from Walmart, and it shot excellent, I sold it to a friend and he has used it for about 2 yrs now without a complaint, and told me he has yet to have to rezero it. Goodluck

Josey with respect to your original question, the 50mm is almost never necessary until you get to high magnifications. Your eye, if you are a young feller, can dialate to about 6 or 7mm. Thus and exit pupil larger than that is providing light your eye cannot use. The larger diameter objective also requires that the scope be mounted higher which is more difficult to use. You are bench shooting which is a bit different from hunting, but for hunting you want to avoid objectives larger than 40-44mm in most cases and you really do not need magnifications greater than 6x (though 3-9x scopes are among the most common sold) I do not see why you would want a mil dot scope unless you need to compute range. If you are at a bench shooting at a known distance, it seems a needless expense. Most of the bells and whistles are neither necessary nor really useful. 0
