Nunn? Sig question....
I went to a gun stop and looked at new Sigs and I may have been mistaken. It seems that the Sigs at the store had the same hammer sitting position as mine (a little distance from the firing pin). The shop owner said that the hammer still made contact with the pin, it just didn't rest the hammer on the pin. I though my Sig had a problem, but now I'm gonna have to go to the range to see for sure.Is it true that the Sig's hammer sits back a short distance? Please let me know... I may have "jumped the gun" so to speak.christian

The SIG hammer, when at rest does not contact the firing pin. If all is well, you cannot push it to contact the firing pin. The only time the hammer can contact the firing pin is when the trigger is pressed. If you are dry firing, you may not be able to see that the hammer is hitting the firing pin and it may look like it stops in the safety position.Without having to go to the range, do this:MAKE SURE THE PISTOL IS UNLOADED.With the slide forward and the hammer at rest, drop a pencil with an eraser on it down the barrel. Elevate the muzzle so the pencil stays put. Now pull the trigger. The pencil should go sailing, or at least exit the muzzle. If this proves negative, try live ammo, in a safe location. If it still doesn't work, send it back.Or I will buy it.

That's a great test nunn. I did it and it didn't send the pencil sailing, but it did slightly move the pencil. Should it have moved more than a couple of centimeters?I'll take it to the range this week and test it with some live ammo and see how it performs. I think this is why this message board exists. Had I not posted the question here, I may have given up on my favorite gun. Thanks for the input nunn.christian 0 -
I never tried it with a SIG, but with the average 1911 it will shoot it out of there.

I checked every double action Sig I own, and they all are the same hammer not on firing pin, but on kind of a half cock, maybe another safety feature on the Sig line of guns, Christian, have fun with your Sig 229, it is in my opinion the finest duty type handgun on the market today, I've got thousands of rounds through mine and NEVER had a malfunction. 0 -
Thanks to everyone who added to this. I'm pleased to know that there are, in fact, knowledgable people on here who can aid in problem solving.I'm grateful that I found out that my favorite gun is okay after all... before I went and did something drastic.christian 0 -
Okay guys on the sig, dont shoot the pencil with the eraser side into the barrel, because it will never leave the barrel.Use a new unsharpened pencil, and put the unsharpended side on the firing pin and it will sail about a foot into the air. ALSO THE HAMMER WILL CONTACT THE FIRING PIN. COCK THE HAMMER BACK AND HOLD IT WITH YOUR THUMB, SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER AND GENTLY LET IT TRAVEL TO THE PIN IT WILL GO ALL THE WAY IN AND MAKE CONTACT. 0
