U.S. MOSIN NAGANT
I HAVE A REMINGTON MADE MOSIN NAGANT RIFLE W/ AN UNUSUAL SERIAL NO. ON IT. THE SERIALNO. ON THE FRONT RECEIVER RING IS SHOWN AS "NO. 17". THE SERIAL NO. ON THE MAGAZINE FLOOR PLATE HAS A LINE THRU IT AND THE NO. "17" STAMPED NEXT TO IT. THE TOP OF THE BUTT PLATE IS STAMPED "17". THE BOLT HAS A MIS-MATCHED NUMBER. THE RIFLE WAS BOUGHT FROM A DEALER WHO HAS SINCE BEEN KILLED IN A ROBBERY ATTEMPT. WHEN IT WAS PURCHASED HE SAID IT WAS FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION. THERE ARE NO IMPORTER MARKS. MY QUESTION IS DOES ANYONE THINK THIS ACTUALLY RIFLE NO. 17 OR ONE THAT WAS JUST RE-MARKED LATER ON.

I would believe the gun was re-numbered at some time in the past, probably during some arsenal re-work. 0 -
I've been doing some thinking about this one...stranger things have happened. I had occassion to select and fire Colt M-16 No. 525 from an Air Force arsenal in Calif. a few years ago (shot very well), but who would think it would be there. Afterall, where are the serial no.s at now? Umpteen million? Could be that the rifle was originally No. 17, but over the years the bolt was replaced. Obviously the magazine (floorplate at least) was originally numbered differently and from a different rifle, but the basic gun may be original. In any event, it will be impossible to locate all the original parts and restore it to original; so you have a curiosity, but not a jewel. 0
