I HAVE A DESERT EAGLE .44 AMONG OTHERS AND I WAS WONDERING IF IT IS OK TO USE SOMETHING LIKE STP SILICONE SPRAY INSTEAD OF REGULAR GUN OIL ON THE SPRINGS AND SUCH...

Stopped using Hoppes Gun Oil years ago and went to Break Free CLP and have no problems. I use about 10 cases of this stuff a year and find no faults with it. Still use Hoppes #9 for getting the fouling out of bores it there is a lot of powder residue and then lubricate with the Break Free.

Just as an alternative piece of info, 15-20 years ago I switched to all military weapons products, both the bore cleaner and the weapons oil...it's usually very inexpensive at gun shows and surplus stores and is simply outstanding...shooting sports are my hobby and I shoot (and clean) a lot all year long...rifles, shotguns, & handguns

I agree with roundball...the mil stuff is very good and very cheap.

Reb, you sure what you saw on the patches was rust and not just old discolored oil?Unless you forgot to oil it, Rem oil (or any other quality gun oil shouldn't allow rust to form in a month under normal storage conditions.BTW, I agree with the rest about using MIL surplus products - good stuff.

RebjrI have used an oil called RIG for the past 20 year on all my guns. I also use it for a lube in my black powder. It is a very thick grease. But when applied to a rag it will spread over everything it touches. The letters RIG stand for rust inhibiting grease. It will come in a small can about one inch in dia and 2 inches tall. I buy the large can 2 inch dis and 3 inch tall. It's hard to find but look around it's out there. Wal-Mart will not have it.

Shotist,Good point, but as I threw the patches away and the trash ran last night, I have no way of knowing. I just about freaked out when I saw it to begin with and commenced a good hard rubdown. As everyone here seems to agree, I shall be visiting my local milsurplus store for the chemicals y'all are talking about. will keep an eye on the gun and look at the next patches more carefully. Thanks everyone for your help-Ralph
