Probably strong enough, but with only 2 lugs (no safety lug) and no gas shield, I would hesitate. In his book, "Bolt Action Rifles," gunsmith Frank de Haas recommends these calbiers: 250-300 Savage, 257 Roberts, 6.5X55, 7mm mauser, 300 Savage, and 35 Remington. He specifically names the .308 as a cartridge one should avoid in rebarrelling this action.

I just wanted to add a complete and unqualified "Ditto" to Jonk's posting above. I've got one I built into a 7x57mm and really like it. There isn't really anything wrong with the 7.65mm either. Don't advise one in .308.

Thanks guys. I'm going to get the book, study it, study the calibers, then do the conversion. I already have one 1891 that was sporterized by my father. It's still the 7.65 x 53. It's a tack driving son of a gun. I just don't need two of them, so I thought I would build it into something else. Thanks for the info, I do appreciate it.

Why convert? The present cal is as good or better than any of your alternatives, plus there is cheap surplus ammo available.

Jonk,A while back I picked up a German 98 action (marked "duv") with the intent of building it up to a 22-250 using a fluted bull barrel with a 1-8 twist (to shoot the 80 grain Sierra) ... would this be a problem since the 22-250 case is basically a necked down .308 case?Thanks,k.k.

The 98 action is not a problem. The 91 action is different, and not as suitable for the higher pressure cartridges.
