Colt Double Barrel 12 ga.
I have a very solid Colt Double Barrel 12 ga. shotgun. I've shot it several times so I know it's safe. It has the big hammers on it and a dime will fit down both barrels. I can't find any dates but it has a 5 digit serial number. Colt horse on the buttplate. Can someone tell me it's value. Thanks.

I saw one about 5 years ago sell for 1800 dollars. It looked about 95% or better. The man who bought it is a sharp, old time gun trader and always makes good money on what he sells. 0 -
That is the Colt Model 1878 shotgun. It was offered in both 10 and 12 gauge, a dime would fit down either. Open the gun and look underneath the breech end of the barrels, it will have either "10" or "12".The serial numbers reached five digits in mid 1881 and remained so until the end of production in 1889. An exact serial number would get you the year. These guns are heavily collected (by me, for one) and value is based on condition and any special order features. I've seen them for as little as $500 and as much as $7500.
