sten gun kits
Can a person reasonably expect to assemble a semi-automatic STEN today from commercially available parts kits? Also, what level of expertise does one need to put one of these together?

There are a few hoops to jump through to "manufacture" a weapon. Check the fed and state and local laws in your specific area BEFORE starting the project. The skill level and tools needed are not that difficult or technical.Andy 0 -
If you have a general mechanics skill, and tools they're pretty easy to make, thats why they were cranked out like crasy during the war. It cost less than $5 to make one when it was over $50 for a thompson. But the problem you get into is that they are full auto. Which makes them illegal. But there is a company called Catco that makes parts to change them to semi-auto, but they cost around $200 or so. So realy building one isn't worth it at all. Be better to just go buy a cheap 9mm rifle. 0 -
You can build a semi auto sten by leaving part of the trigger housing cut out in place, it blocks the selector from pushing the disconector over and the sear catches the bolt every time. If this will get you bye with State and Federal rules, an easy fix.

Emmett's solution sounds interesting.
Emmett, please post a copy of your ATF determination letter stating that this is legal.

It has to be designed with a reduced inside diameter tube that will not accept a full sized Sten bolt, and it must fire from a closed bolt configuration. This is a BATF requirement. It is not an easy fix.

There are absolutely no hoops to jump through to manufacture a firearm, as long as that firearm is otherwise legal for the person to own and not built with the intention to re-sell. For example, you cannot build an assault weapon in California. You must obey all local and federal laws regarding the manufacture and configuration of the firearm. However, in the vast majority of States across the United States, a person who is not a felon, and is of legal age, can build a fierarm in his/her garage and tell no one about it. As long as I, and most Americans, have the ability, you can build a semi-automatic AK47 or AR15 styled rifle in the garage and not put any serial numbers on it, or report it in any way. No big hoops to jump through.

As I stated you can make the modification if it will pass state and federal rules. You can do Sten modification using parts other than the standard pieces and be legal, the finished products are for sale on the net. As far as the Semi Auto statement I made, It is easy to make the modification. There is a company that makes a blocker that will do the same thing with the trigger opening already cut.

P.S.
If our fore fathers had followed all the rules, there would not have been an United States, furthermore, at some point in time the rules will take away more and more of your rights and they do not have to be gun rights.0 -

Is this modification open bolt or closed bolt? Could you post a link to it?

The closed bolt conversion is the replacement of parts to meet the Federal requirements by replacing the number of original parts required. Rockloc.com has a complete kit to convert your Sten but you still must check your State laws to make sure the conversion is legal. I'm in California and there is no way the Sten can be owned here unless it is a kit, I don't know about the tube together with the kit not assembled.
Good, Luck
