Which .308 gun?

They are all pretty bulky rifles. I just brought an M1A Standard as I wanted a .308 gun, not because the design was the best, but because I couldn't find either of the other rifles in the states that were high quality new factory weapons, with new high cap mags. They were all used or remanufactured. The fact that I could get a number of new in wrapper GI mags from the dealer really swayed me towards the M1A as well.I've read for years about the HK-91 and L1-A1 being great designs, moreso than the M-14. I actually would have preferred one of them, as they are more closed to the elements. Though the Garand rifle proved itself in WWII, and was the basis for the M-14/M1A, I'm not too keen on the M1A having an open top design, with the extractor completely open to the elements. It also has a roller and a rail that the operating rod rides in, both of which are also completely open to the elements. The HK-91 has all those parts tucked safely inside. In a truly free country, I'd have opted for the HK, but the M-14/M1A is not a bad choice in the end, and is certainly far more reliable than an AR-15.
