I don't think the number you mention is a serial number. The early .22s weren't required to have them and I've never seen one on a Stevens. It is a part number. The only way to tell which year .....approximately...is with the barrel length. From 1912-1924 the Marksman had a 20" barrel. It was changed to a 22" in 1924.

Thanks KidsGuns. My wall hanger has an R and 285 marked on the underside of the receiver. I just "ASSUMED" this was a serial #.

Hello. I just read your post and I see it is an old post but i'm hoping you can help me out. I am in need of parts for a marksman #12 in .22cal. I have only been able to find a mainspring so far. My question is if you still have your marksman rifle/rifles. Could you possibly ,measure the cocking plunger and the mainspring plunger? I am working on one for a friend who just got it back after many years of his brother having it. It is now missing some parts. I can make them but I have nothing to go off as I said the original parts are missing. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give. Thank you!
